Herman John Haverkamp Jr. (1888-1937) and Mary Jessie Cluckey (1894-1978) were married in 1912 and had 13 children. They were farmers on the White Earth Reservation in Becker County, Minnesota, where the Nelson Act of 1889 had expropriated Anishinaabe lands for sale to white settlers. Herman was a son of German farmers from Holdorf, Lower Saxony, who had immigrated to Stearns County, Minnesota. Mary was descended from the Cloutier family of 17th-century Quebec and from the Streeter family of East Grinstead, Sussex, England.
