Biographical notes for Jean Lemire
Arrived in New France about 1650 as a carpenter of windmills.
He is best known for his work on the
Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-Québec. He signed a contract for this work on January 4, 1684, and is credited with the construction, “in Batiscan oak,” of a bell tower for the south tower of the cathedral, under the direction of Claude Baillif. As he died shortly after beginning work at the cathedral, it is presumed that Lemire built the bell tower on the ground for its future installation.
