For circumstantial evidence linking Elizabeth to her parents John Canote Sr. and Rosannah Hunse, see The Canote Chronicle by Paul K. Zebe (2013), pp. 20-21. The full text of this book is available online.107 I favor this theory of Elizabeth’s parentage because of the links to Washington Co., MD, and Madison Co., KY; and because Elizabeth’s first son and daughter were named John and Rosannah. Also, both Elizabeth Canote Sheeks and Rosannah Canote Shirley had sons named Denton.
Zebe offers a second possibility for the identity of Elizabeth’s father–one Christopher Cannotes/Cannoutson of Madison Co., KY–but notes that there is no known link between that individual and Elizabeth’s birth state of Maryland.
